Equality Now, in partnership with NGOs based in Uzbekistan – Istiqbolli Avlod, NIHOL Initiative’s Development and Supporting Centre, Centre for Scientific, Social and Humanitarian Initiatives Oila and Public Unity Yuksak Salohiyat – submitted a communication to the UN Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) on the urgent need for Uzbekistan to align its laws and policies on violence against women with international human rights standards.

What’s included in the submission?

  • In 2023, Uzbekistan made significant legal amendments to combat violence against women and girls and domestic violence. However, there is room for further changes to ensure better protection for women and girls in Uzbekistan.
  •  The submission highlights significant gaps in the definitions and enforcement of laws related to domestic and sexual violence, particularly underreporting and discriminatory practices within the justice system.
